70% Monastrell, 30% Tempranillo El Abuelo, Spanish for The Grandfather, who is pictured on the striking label. It is a photo of Luis Piqueras who established the family vineyards and started making jug wine in 1915. In 1927 his lottery spend of 8 pesetas brought him luck and he won! With his winnings he invested in the original Piqueras winery. Bodegas Piqueras is now run by his grand-sons together with his 2 great grand-sons, who are also now working in the Estate and Bodega The El Abuelo (Grandfather) is deep in colour, with aromas of black fruit, cocoa and tobacco. This wine is dry and approachable, with crushed berry flavours, balanced acidity and a fine, ripe tannic structure. It goes well with red meats dishes of all kinds, game birds, and also grilled fish dishes. Organic.
